I remember reading the first part of this book in middle school a little over a decade ago.

I remember the main character was a girl who was told not to go into the woods(which were taking over parts of the kingdom?) and when she did, she met someone who taught her how to knit using pine needles and sunlight. Somehow she ended up in a castle or bigger city? I think it was a medieval setting
