ASUS VivoBook 15: BSODs, Flickering, Gray Screen & Random No-Power Issue

ASUS VivoBook 15: BSODs, Flickering, Gray Screen & Random No-Power Issue

Timeline of the issue:

  • Initially, I started getting random BSODs and automatic restarts.
  • Later, the BSODs disappeared, but the screen started randomly going black for about 1 second and then coming back. During this time, the laptop itself kept running normally.
  • After some time, the laptop suddenly became completely dead:
    • no charging LED
    • no power light
  • A technician diagnosed a faulty power IC and replaced it.
  • Laptop worked again, but the flickering issue remained.
  • Then the laptop died AGAIN with the exact same symptoms (completely dead/no LED). It was repaired again free of charge, but no clear root cause was identified.

Now the laptop is working again, and the flickering issue has reduced a lot, but it still happens occasionally.

Additional important behavior:

  • If I restart the laptop, there is around an 80% chance the display will fail to load properly.
  • The ASUS logo always appears normally during boot.
  • I can hear the Windows welcome/login sound, which means the system itself is running.
  • But instead of the login screen, the display becomes a plain gray screen and stays there.
  • To get into Windows properly, I usually have to force shutdown and power it on multiple times until the display finally works.
  • I’m attaching an image of this gray-screen state.

Other observations:

  • The issue seems worse on battery than on charger.
  • During a power cut, while switching from charger to battery, the screen flickered and then the video froze for several seconds while audio kept playing.
  • Another time on battery, the screen went black for a few seconds while audio continued normally.
  • The issue is NOT related to moving the screen/lid.
  • Sometimes after shutting down normally, the laptop later refuses to power on at all.

At this point I’m confused whether this is:

  • motherboard power rail instability
  • GPU/iGPU power issue
  • RAM/power delivery issue
  • battery power switching issue
  • failing PMIC/VRM
  • or something else entirely.

What confuses me most is the sequence:
BSODs → display flickering → gray-screen boots → complete no-power state → temporary recovery after power IC repair.

Has anyone experienced something similar or diagnosed a fault like this before?

My ASUS VivoBook 15 has a very strange recurring issue and I’m trying to understand the real root cause before spending more money on repairs.

Timeline of the issue:

  • Initially, I started getting random BSODs and automatic restarts.
  • Later, the BSODs disappeared, but the screen started randomly going black for about 1 second and then coming back. During this time, the laptop itself kept running normally.

  • Then the laptop died AGAIN with the exact same symptoms (completely dead/no LED). It was repaired again free of charge, but no clear root cause was identified.

Now the laptop is working again, and the flickering issue has reduced a lot, but it still happens occasionally.
