How do you create combat and a subplot with the characters in Brin Shander?

My players have already explored Zephyros tower, experienced the battles and interactions in its tower, and are now heading towards Brin Shander..

After the Zephyros section ended and before the session concluded, instead of giving them an NPC to control during the main battle, I decided to randomly assign each of them an NPC to actually role-play in Brin Shander, while the giants haven't yet arrived and their characters are on their way to the city. This was so they would become more attached to the NPCs and feel more engaged during the conflict.

There are three players, and they are assigned the roles of Sirac, Beldora, and Ser Barie, each with all the relevant information about their provisional characters, and each pursuing their objectives and interacting with other NPCs (Sirac with his sense of emptiness, Beldora trying to gather information, and Barie searching for his criminal in the tavern).

Since the session was already ending and I just wanted to give them this surprise, they didn't act much, and now I'm not quite sure how to handle the invasion of the giants. The book doesn't give much information about it, besides some practical problems with when the characters meet in Brin Shander.
