Hi everyone,

I’ve been scouting the exhibition and trade show industry lately and noticed a few openings for R&D (Research & Development) roles. Coming from a background where I thought R&D was strictly for Biotech or Software, seeing it in the context of Exhibitions is intriguing but a bit confusing.

I’m trying to wrap my head around what the day-to-day actually looks like in this niche. For those of you working in R&D at exhibition firms or experiential agencies:

  • What is the primary focus? Are you mostly researching sustainable materials/modular construction, or is it more about integrating "Event Tech" like AR, VR, and interactive sensors?
  • Skillset requirements: Do firms usually look for Industrial Designers, Engineers, or UX Researchers who understand visitor flow and human behavior?
  • The "Reality" Check: Is the role actually about innovation, or is it often just a fancy title for "Sourcing cheaper materials from overseas" or "Troubleshooting broken LED walls"?
  • Work-Life Balance: Does the R&D team get hit with the same "crunch time" madness as the Production and Account teams right before a major show opens?

I love the idea of bridging the gap between creative design and technical execution, but I don't want to jump into a role that might just be "Technical Support" in disguise.

Would love to hear any insights, "day-in-the-life" stories, or even warnings about the direction the industry is heading.

Thanks in advance!
