Applied for a day time, weekends only, cashier position at a warehouse liquor store type of place. Opening shifts only, 6:30 am, for Saturday/Sundays only, as I work a FT gig during the week. Just needed some extra funds and figure I can do this for a year or so.

Went through the two week training after my day time job at 5pm to 9 pm, M-Th, confirming each day of training my available hours with the SM and my DM and that I was weekends only after this training time. Was even told that they really loved the fact that I was there only to work those dedicated weekend hours, as spring and summer hires are usually pretty flakey and as an older employee, they felt they had someone to depend on. First half of the month when I started working all was great, my set hours worked out well, the people I worked with loved that I had experience and was on time and ready to go each day I was scheduled.

The fifth weekend I went in to get my schedule and was scheduled for the next 6 days during the day and evening shifts. Went to HR and was told that they do not have any record of my availability and scheduled me for what I was hired for. Brought up my emails from the hiring manager and SM about my set schedule. Was told if I am not there first thing in the morning to expect my final check in the mail, that I was hired to work for them and I had to adhere to the schedule. I was also told that they do not hire people for any type of set schedule or hours. Let them know that was not going to happen, I was not going to be there outside of those set hours and lose my 'real' full time job with 401k, 15 years of employment and benefits for a part time, minimum wage position. The HR replied that I was easily replaceable and good luck in the future. Very uncaring and affected. Point received.

As I was leaving the store, I let the front end management know that I was on their schedule for the next week and what had been said to me when I asked for clarification. But I made sure they (floor managers and DM) knew I was not going to be there or coming in what so ever and was basically terminated. I did not want to mess up the other employees or hurt the floor, which is why I was letting them both know. The two shift leads and coworker were upset with what was done and that I was leaving for good, but did thank me for letting the store know I was not going to be there. Figured that was it and I cleaned out my locker and left.

Color me super surprised when they called me the next three mornings in a row to get me to come in 'for my shift' before 7 am, or demanding that I find coverage. When I stated this is not happening, I was then threatened with being written up for no call-no show, as well as being suspended- someone even said they would be calling my parents (emergency contact) to let them know that i was 'blowing off my shifts', I actually did laugh out loud when I heard that and asked if they thought my very elderly parent would actually care what her 55+ yo child did and how would she punish me? I also called this person a tattle tale when I was laughing at the remark.

I do not feel bad, I let everyone know what was happening and why I was there, why I was hired, when I was available to work and then what would happen if they scheduled me for any times outside of my availability. I felt bad for not being there when other people, who were not in the loop, were spread thin and had to cover or deal with things they were not expecting. But that is it.

Remember, it is not that people do not want to work any more, some of us do want to work, but have other obligations and many people are not going to just suck up bad behavior from employers and knuckle down under the pressure for issues that are not the employees to deal with. I got another job at a bakery that helped me with my monetary goals and I am still a part time employee working the hours I applied for years later.
