I'm looking to build a 6 foot chainlink fence. I've read that you want to bury the post 1/3 of the height of the fence. So in this case 2 feet of the post is underground. With an 8 foot post, that'll leave 6 ft of the post above ground. However I've also read that you want to have an inch of clearance on the bottom of the mesh, and at least 2 inches above. So based on that, it sounds like you'd need 6 ft 3 inches of the post above ground. Which would not meet the 2 foot requirement. I considered getting a 9 foot post and digging it deeper but Home Depot only sells 8 foot posts, but they sell 6 foot mesh so I'm assuming I am missing something. How does this work with an 8 foot post?
Also, I keep reading that the better way is to dig the post to 30 inches or more. Especially in a windy area. But again, everywhere I'm seeing posts, the max is 8 foot. Is 30 inches not necessary? Any insight is appreciated.
