Brother Trying To Find His Style

Hi Reddit,

My little brother (17M) has had super thick, wavy hair his whole life. Our mom always had hairstylists cut it like a super short collegiate style, but my brother absolutely hates it. Once, I took him to a Great Clips salon and asked them to keep his hair longer (it typically sits at about 5ish inches) but add some layers. They basically just gave him a trim, without asking clarifying questions on what he was going for. He struggles to ask for help himself, and I don’t really know much about hair but he has started coming to me because he knows I’ll encourage him to get what he wants.

All that to say, any advice on ways to cut his hair in a way that would complement his round face (clean-shaven), keep his hair on the longer side, while taming those thick waves? I’d love for him to only ever get a trim, but admittedly, it does very quickly become a rats nest that way. I don’t have a lot of money to spend on fancy hair salons, but any suggestions would be helpful.
