I do not have a family, and am rather critical of fiction whether i like the work or not. And I loved the original show and even most of its final episodes (definitely had some gripes).
But I honestly fail to see a reason to watch this show if it has no continuity with main story. Like, where the fuck does Nikki go after this ends, and why is she never mentioned or alluded to? What's the deal with the plant monsters, why are THEY never brought up? I can understand these questions and more getting properly addressed in later seasons, but that plus the general tone and vibe of the show compared to the main show just throw me off severely.
I'd be more interested if this story were canon, but following a mostly or completely unrelated group dealing with effects of the main story, or something completely different that ties in to the main story in a subtle manner.
So, is it really canon? If it is, how? If it isn't, is it still worth it if i don't have the child's perspective anymore? I kind of like the mature/dark but grounded in nostalgia vibe of the main show, and this seems to lack some of that.
