Been spending a lot of time researching the interior design and construction space lately, speaking with principals at design firms, contractors, site supervisors, procurement teams, and vendors.

Not trying to sell anything. Just genuinely trying to understand how projects actually operate day to day.

What surprised me is that the biggest problems rarely seem to come from the creative side.

Most people in this industry are extremely good at the actual work.

The chaos starts around the work.

A single mid-sized project can involve:

  • designers
  • contractors
  • multiple vendors
  • procurement teams
  • site supervisors
  • consultants
  • clients
  • execution teams on-site

And somehow everyone is coordinating through a mix of WhatsApp groups, calls, PDFs, BOQs, AutoCAD drawings, SketchUp files, Google Drive folders, spreadsheets, and verbal updates.

Site photos get uploaded into folders that slowly become impossible to navigate.

Someone shares an updated drawing, but half the people on-site are still working from the older version.

Approvals happen on calls that nobody documents.

Clients change something mid-project and the information reaches different teams at different times.

A vendor confirms one thing verbally, the contractor understands something else, and two weeks later there’s a ₹40,000–₹50,000 discrepancy nobody can properly trace.

What’s interesting is that from the outside the project still looks organized.

The presentation deck looks clean.
The renders look beautiful.
The client sees progress.

But internally, a lot of projects seem to run on memory, follow-ups, and people constantly chasing each other for updates.

One thing I kept hearing repeatedly was:

“I got into this because I love design, but most of my time goes into coordination.”

That gap between the craft and the operational reality feels massive, especially for an industry handling projects worth lakhs and crores.

>Curious to hear from people actually working in the space:

What’s the one operational issue that slows projects down the most for you? And have you found anything that genuinely makes coordination easier?
