We removed tile from a house built in 1980 without testing for asbestos. How dumb were we?

I'm looking back on this now and really, it's largely a moot point (unless I should go for certain health screenings or something in the decades to come?)

But this came up as a topic recently and I'm curious...

How badly did my husband and I possibly f*ck up?

When we bought our townhouse 8 years ago it had Saltillo Mexican tile throughout some of it. The townhouse itself was built in 1980 in Florida and the tile was really dated looking, so we wanted to change it.

But also, we were poor then and had scraped pennies just to buy the place, so we decided to jackhammer it up ourselves.

We wore respirators because it was obviously very dusty, but I don't recall if we wore them 100% of the time.

We didn't test the thinset for asbestos.

How dumb were we?

We are selling our house (Open House is tomorrow 🫠) and wanted to clean the oven beforehand (reasonable) and opted to use the self cleaning feature on the oven to do so.

Unfortunately, my husband didn't clean the oven well before he did that. He even left a freaking french fry in it 🤦‍♀️

And now my house smells like smoke and Open House is still tomorrow 😩

Any tips for helping me get rid of the smell?

We've done the basics (wiping everything in the kitchen down with water and vinegar, putting out some bowls of baking soda out, airing out with fans) -- any other ideas?

Thank you in advance! 💛

Okay, okay, I see this has come up in this community a couple times before.

But I'm trying very hard to come up with a well defined list of criteria, ideally based on research in some way.

There are some things I know already, like I don't want to be right next to a farm or golf course, for example... but *how far away* is the question I'm not sure how to answer right now.

Additionally-- airports, major highways, gas stations, dry cleaners, etc, etc...

(I'm sure I'm missing some things!)

But really, what I'm asking is how far from any given hazard would you aim to be?

Are there already lists like this online somewhere? Websites or studies I can refer to? I'd appreciate any resources you have! Thank you
