Hi everyone,

I’m running into an issue with my audio setup and can’t seem to figure out what I’m missing.

Here’s how everything is connected:

  • PC → TV via HDMI
  • TV → AV receiver via optical (Toslink)
  • 5.1 surround system connected to the receiver

Everything works in general — I do get sound — but here’s the problem:
In Windows sound settings, I only get the option for stereo. There’s no way to switch to 5.1.

So now I’m wondering:

  • Is this a limitation of Windows or my audio drivers?
  • Is the TV acting as a bottleneck here?
  • Or am I just missing some obvious setting?

My current suspicion is that the TV might only be passing through stereo over optical instead of true 5.1, but I’m not entirely sure if that’s always the case or if there’s a workaround.

Has anyone dealt with a similar setup or knows what’s going on here?
And more importantly: Is there a way to get proper 5.1 surround sound from the PC without completely changing the setup?

Thanks in advance!
