Hi! I have 6 years of PR experience (for tech & pop culture clients), I have a Masters from USC in Digital Media Management, and I want to quit my job cold turkey and do a career switch into filmmaking.
For context: I’ve always wanted to get into the film career but I know it’s not stable and it doesn’t pay well. That’s why I chose PR. However, I’m 27 years old, I’ve become important at my job, I don’t have any passion left for PR, and I hate my job so much it’s making me mentally ill.
I’ve come to a point where I want to give myself that shot into the film career and just see what happens. At least when I get old, I can tell myself, “I’m glad I tried it”. I’ve always been passionate about films and the entertainment industry in general.
My plan is to quit my job, do my own “DIY internship” by trying to get PA gigs, networking, and getting to know the industry. After that, using my combined experience of Project Manager/PR + entertainment on set skills to try and land a corporate entertainment job.
Do you more seasoned entertainment folks think this is a stupid idea? Should I leave behind my stability and a job I hate and wasting my youth on to give myself a shot to try something new?
