Family’s 11 Year Battle for Justice Dismissed Again Despite Georgia Supreme Court Ruling

Hello,

My name is Vanessa Joyner. I recently spoke with a WTOC reporter about birth-related deaths and patient safety concerns at Memorial Health University Medical Center, and I’m reaching out because our family’s experience may align with current issues being investigated. I spoke to a contact of theirs, but I also want to connect with any available news outlets.

In 2015, I experienced a catastrophic obstetric event during my care at Savannah Memorial Hospital. I sustained a T-shaped uterine incision, and in my next pregnancy, my uterus ruptured, leading to the early birth of my second son and ultimately a total hysterectomy. Independent high-risk OB/GYNs consulted in our case have raised concerns that critical warning signs, including concerning fetal heart rate patterns, were not acted upon appropriately.

We pursued legal action and are seeking accountability and justice for our son. We were dismissed twice and went through appeals both times. Our case eventually reached the Georgia Supreme Court, and we won, but it was recently dismissed again at the trial court level. We also have concerns about whether relationships within the local community may be affecting how the case has been handled.

After years of trying to work quietly within the legal system, because we did not want to anger the judge. Now, we know it is important to share our story and ask for transparency and accountability. We believe our experience may be relevant to the broader issues that the hospital has been trying to conceal.

If you are willing, we would be grateful for the opportunity to speak with you confidentially about our experience and provide supporting documents. Our lawyer is also available for comment. Here is his information:
