Something I’ve been trying to wrap my head around from a data perspective…
We all talk about 'momentum' during games a team strings together chances, long offensive zone time, multiple high danger looks and it feels like the game is tilting.
But when you go back to the numbers, it’s not always clear how to properly capture that.
I’ve looked at things like:
- short-term xG bursts (rolling windows)
- shot attempt differentials over a few minutes
- zone time proxies
Still feels a bit noisy though, especially since a lot of it depends on game state and score effects.
Curious how others here approach it:
Is there a metric or method you’ve found that actually does a good job capturing those in game 'momentum' swings, or is it just too situational to quantify cleanly?
