Subject: A Sincere Plea to the Front Office: Why Jalen Duren is Not the Future

o the Detroit Pistons Management and President Trajan Langdon,
As a dedicated fan who has stood by this team through its most challenging years, I am writing this out of deep concern for our franchise's future. We are at a critical crossroads, and the decision regarding Jalen Duren’s contract extension will dictate whether we return to championship contention or remain stuck in mediocrity for another decade.
While Duren’s "20-10" stat lines look impressive on a box score, anyone watching the games with a critical eye can see the harsh reality: Jalen Duren is a liability to our winning culture.
1. The "Stat Padding" Illusion vs. Defensive Bankruptcy
Basketball is won on both ends of the floor. Duren possesses elite physical tools, yet his defensive awareness is among the worst for starting centers in this league. His inability to track rotations, his late help-side defense, and his lack of rim protection have turned our paint into a "highway" for opposing guards. A center who cannot anchor a defense is a luxury we cannot afford.
2. The Danger of the Max Contract "Calamity"
Offering Duren a Max or near-Max extension would be a catastrophic mistake. Under the new CBA, financial flexibility is everything. Tying up $40M+ annually in a center who doesn't shoot, doesn't pass at an elite level, and—most importantly—doesn't defend, will paralyze this team's ability to build around Cade Cunningham and Ausar Thompson.
3. Strike While the Value is High
The league has seen Duren's flaws, but there are still teams enamored by his age and rebounding numbers. We must use Duren as a trade asset now, while his market value remains inflated by his raw stats. We need a defensive anchor—a player who understands positioning over highlights.
We don't need "potential" anymore; we need winning basketball. I urge the front office to be cold-blooded in this evaluation. Do not let the fear of "losing a young talent" prevent you from making the right move. Trade Jalen Duren for pieces that actually complement our core and fit a modern, defensive-minded system.
Detroit deserves a team that plays the right way.
Sincerely,
A Loyal Detroit Pistons Fan
