Somewhere along the way it became mine to do, and when I pulled the last curtain shut, my body froze; there was a figure in the yard kneeling in the dirt, hands pulling something wet and dark out of a ribcage, and it looked up the moment I touched the curtain, wearing his face, mouth black with it, and something deep in me understood that whatever this was had been coming home to us for years.
