I have a Bachelor’s in Applied Arts / Visual Communication from India and around 4.5 years of experience across graphic design, branding, UI/UX, packaging, campaign design, and web/landing page design.
I’m planning to apply for a master’s in Europe, most likely in areas like Strategic Design, Service Design, UX/Interaction Design, Design Management, or Communication Design.
I’m currently confused between Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
- Germany feels like the most practical option because of affordability, public universities, and stronger post-study work options, but I’m unsure about the design/UX job market and how important German language skills are.
- Italy feels more creatively aligned with my interests, especially because of its design culture, but I’m worried about salaries, job opportunities, and long-term career growth after graduation.
- The Netherlands seems strong for design, UX, and international exposure, but the cost of living and tuition seem much higher, which makes it a little risky financially.
My main priorities are:
- good design curriculum and portfolio development
- realistic job opportunities after graduation
- possibility of working in UX, service design, or brand/strategy roles
- affordability
- post-study work options
- long-term career growth
For people who studied in Europe or are working there:
- Which country would make the most sense for someone with my background?
- How important is the local language for design/UX jobs in Germany, Italy, or the Netherlands?
- Are design master’s degrees in Europe actually worth it for employability?
- Would UX/service/strategic design be a better direction than pure visual/communication design?
- Are there any universities, cities, or programs I should seriously consider or avoid?
I’m asking this more from a design career perspective than just a visa/country perspective.
