I’m currently working in a finance role, and there’s an opening in another team that focuses more on business planning and analysis. I haven’t officially worked in that area before, but I’ve been with the company for about 3 years.
Reasons I want to apply:
-My current team’s leadership is toxic, and I feel mentally and physically drained most days.
-The new role comes with a slightly higher pay (around 5–10%).
-It would give me a chance to move into a more forward-looking, analytical function.
Why I’m hesitating:
-I tried to connect with the hiring manager informally to understand the role and whether I might be a good fit, but they asked me to go through the standard application process like everyone else. That made me feel like I may not be a strong internal candidate, even though I’m familiar with the systems and some of the responsibilities. Please note that I have no interaction with this hiring manager for all these years cuz we handle different functions
-My current manager has a reputation for not taking these kinds of moves well, so I’m worried that applying (and not getting the role) could put a target in my back
-Due to poor leadership, the team is now understaffed, which may further upset my manager if I apply to another team.
-Since I don’t have experience in that specific area, my chances may be lower compared to external candidates who already do. However, the recruiter mentioned that the hiring manager isn’t looking for someone highly technical, but rather someone who is trainable and able to follow through well.
Thanks
