Hey folks! I’m a naturalized citizen planning to change my name through a court order for personal reasons unrelated to marriage or adoption. I’m based in Louisiana and recently found out I can’t renew my driver’s license until my certificate of naturalization is updated. That process can take up to a year and costs nearly $600.
Several local OMV offices confirmed that I’ll have the court order and an updated Social Security record, but my license would still need to wait until my naturalization certificate reflects the new name. That would leave me driving for up to a year with a license under my old name, and I’m not sure how that affects traveling within the U.S. with an ID that no longer matches my legal name.
I was also told I may not be able to renew my passport without an updated driver’s license, which makes me even more confused and anxious. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I’d appreciate any insight.
Thanks!
