Hey everyone,

I’ve been dealing with some ongoing issues in my left knee over the past year and would really appreciate any input or similar experiences.

It started with occasional clicking during certain movements, especially when rowing on an erg. At that point, there was no real pain.

Later on, I sometimes felt a slight sense of instability. Almost like my lower leg would “catch” briefly while running, although that was pretty rare.

Over time, I started noticing pain during lateral movements and especially with rotational stress. Toward the end of the year, I had two instances during training (mainly loaded lunges) where I felt a snapping sensation in the knee.

I’ve seen a few doctors:

- First diagnosis was just inflammation. X-ray was clean, and I was told to rest briefly but otherwise keep training.

- I then had an MRI, which was mostly unremarkable except for a slightly thickened medial plica.

- Most recently, another orthopedist reviewed everything and said he doesn’t see any structural issue either. The only thing he mentioned was that I might have a kneecap shape (patella) that tends to get irritated more easily.

He suggested that hyaluronic acid injections could be an option.

So my questions:

- Has anyone heard of / experienced something like a “kneecap shape prone to inflammation”?

- Any experience with hyaluronic acid injections for this kind of issue?

- Any other recommendations that helped you with similar symptoms?

For context, I’m mid 30s and quite active. Paused running now for some weeks and focused on strength + swimming.

Appreciate any thoughts!
