like, i still remember a specific crack in the sidewalk from when i was 5, or the smell of a very specific eraser. why does our brain keep this stuff instead of actually useful information? lol

i'll be staring right at the page, my eyes are moving through the sentences, but my mind is somewhere else entirely. then i realize i have no idea what just happened in the story and i have to start the whole page over. it's like my brain just forgot to press the record button.
does anyone else feel this? i pick up a book tagged as "dark" and "toxic" expecting a truly unhinged mmc, but then he falls in love and by page 100 he’s basically a softie who just needs a hug.
give me your absolute darkest, most morally black mmcs. i want the ones who stay villains until the very end. no "misunderstood" bad boys, just pure, toxic chaos where you actually worry for the fmc's safety lol. the more unhinged, the better.
what are the books that actually made you feel uncomfortable but you couldn't stop reading?
