Last year I noticed I was doing 3+ hours a day on Instagram and Reddit. Not because I wanted to. Just reflex. Phone in hand, thumb up, 1 hour gone.
Tried screen time limits. Tapped Ignore every time. Brain just knew where exactly the ignore button is. Tried deleting the apps. Reinstalled within 2 days. Grayscale. Focus mode. All of it. Nothing stuck.
What worked was having something else to do. Not just "be productive", something already picked for me, short, not boring.
So I built that. It's called Unskroll(name changed from Unscroll as the name was already widely used).
Idea:
Pick up to 3 tracks. Meditation, running, workouts, reading. Each morning you get one guided task, 5 to 30 mins. Open the app. Do the task. Close it.
No feeds. No autoplay. No premium. No ads.
The mascot is Scrolly. Fuzzy monster who eats your attention. Shrinks when you do your task. Grows when you skip. Testers got attached, which I didn't expect.
Current Numbers
3 months. Solo. Day job 9-5, this on nights/weekends.
1 person + AI. Cursor for code, Claude for strategy and specs.
37 users so far. Most from cold Reddit DMs to strangers and reddit promotions.
Top user: 20 day streak across 3 tracks. Hasn't missed.
Stack: React + Supabase + Firebase for push notifications.
If you tried to cut your screen time and something actually worked long term, tell me what it was. Doesn't have to be my app.
If you try Unskroll and bounce, please tell me why. DMs open.

If you're building solo while doing a full time job, what's your weekend rhythm? I'm bad at protecting time.

After you all loved yesterday's short breaks from your phone. Thought this is what we should all do as a community. Help each other. No long posts. Small things to help each other.
Today you have one weird and one sweet task.
Leave the phone
Task 1:
Go to a room which has tiles - Kitchen, washroom, bedroom. Has to be a different space from your phone. Pick a wall. Count the number of tilles. :)
Task 2:
Go and stand in front of the mirror.
Stare yourself in the eyes.
Notice all the flaws and all the beauty spots on the face.
Doesn't matter if you have flawless hair or clumsy hair or frizzy hair or no hair at all.
Notice it all.
You love this person.
Smile and say "You are awesome. You can fight it all. Come what may you have all the support of this person"
If you want to come back and share how it felt, please do.
Otherwise if you feel like spending more time just with yourself that's even better.
Leave the phone right and go do this. Like right now. Don't have any second thoughts.
