Osaka selects next tranche of rail projects for study

Official press release: https://www.city.osaka.lg.jp/hodoshiryo/seisakukikakushitsu/0000669428.html

The list comprises the following projects:

Naniwasuji - Shin-Osaka Connector: Led by Hankyu, this is an extension of the Naniwasuji line from the original terminus of Umeda to Shin-Osaka. Currently services are expected to share the Osaka-Higashi tracks, and this alternate route would help to relieve some of the pressure on that bottleneck. There will also be an additional stop at Hankyu's Juso hub, which is undergoing urban redevelopment.

JR Sakurajima line extension: This would extend the JR line to the casino being constructed at Yumeshima. It will provide a second access to the site after the Osaka Metro Chuo line, which was extended for the World Expo in 2025.

Keihan Nakanoshima line extension: This would extend Keihan's Nakanoshima spur line to Kujo. The line has been underperforming since its opening in 2008, and it is hoped that this extension would help to draw some traffic from casino-goers.

Overall it represents a shift in focus from expanding coverage to building relief corridors serving key hubs. 11 million yen has been budgeted by the City, with additional contributions expected from the Prefecture and private operators.

A bit late but JRE has finally put out this PR video.

This is the first of several track relocations planned near Tamachi station for the Haneda Access Line. The Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku tracks were shifted west in a 36 hour shutdown during April 2025. Future shutdowns will be scheduled for the Tokaido Main line tracks and subsequent tie-in connections.

The Haneda Access Line is scheduled to open in 2031.

The replacement bridge carrying the Hanshin Namba line over the Yodogawa river in Osaka is currently under construction. The original bridge is over a century old and needs replacing because it is built too low by today's standards. It is actually lower than the embankments on either side of the rivers and is therefore a weak point in the city's flood defenses.

The new bridge is set 7 m higher and will have less piers, improving water flow in the river and reduce navigational hazards. Two stations on either side of the river, Fuku and Dempo, will also be rebuilt as elevated structures. Once complete, the line will be fully grade-separated.

Unfortunately the steel trusses that make up the bridge, some of which have already been installed, have been found riddled with subpar welds and will have to be refabricated / replaced. As a result of these issues, the Contractor has recorded a billion yen loss. The original opening date of 2031 is also now unlikely to be met.
