Opposition’s Anti Hindu Remarks and Hate Speech Are Destroying Their Own Politics and Helping BJP Expand Its Hindutva Base ..

Congress leader JMH Maulana supporting Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks on Sanatan Dharma once again shows why the opposition continues to struggle politically across large parts of India.

Political criticism is normal in a democracy, but repeatedly making harsh remarks against Hinduism and then defending them in the name of secularism is becoming a major political mistake. One sided secular politics along with appeasement politics for non Hindu vote banks is creating a feeling among many Hindus that their faith, traditions, and culture are not being respected equally.

Supporting statements like the “eradication of Sanatan Dharma” remark may help in short term political messaging, but in the long run it only damages the credibility of the opposition further, especially when it is already going through one of its weakest phases nationally.

Congress and several opposition parties have already lost major ground in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Jammu and Kashmir, and the North East. Instead of rebuilding trust among the majority community, leaders continue making statements that give BJP the perfect opportunity to strengthen its Hindutva narrative.

West Bengal is probably the biggest example of how this political shift can happen over time. No community in India was considered more secular than Bengalis. Bengali society has long been known for being highly progressive, educated, intellectual, liberal, and deeply secular. For decades, Bengal remained strongly anti BJP and BJP had almost no political presence there. Until 2011, BJP could not even win a single seat in the state, and in 2016 it won only 3 seats.

But over time many Hindus in Bengal started feeling that their religion, traditions, festivals, faith, and cultural identity were being ignored or undermined in the name of selective secularism. That feeling gradually changed the political mood of the state. By 2026, many people who once strongly opposed BJP eventually saw it as the only political alternative to protect their cultural and religious identity, and BJP was able to form the government in Bengal.

Tamil Nadu may still remain politically different today, and BJP may not yet be strong there, but repeated attacks on Sanatan Dharma and Hindu beliefs can slowly help BJP expand its influence there as well by consolidating Hindu sentiment over time.

If the opposition genuinely wants to challenge BJP politically, then it must move away from anti Hindu rhetoric and divisive statements against Hinduism. Secularism cannot survive if it is seen as selective or biased. Respect for every religion, including the majority faith of the country, is necessary for maintaining political trust in a diverse democracy like India.
