Doing my first gig in 2 weeks — birthday party, open format (R&B, pop, Top 40, hip hop etc.) and I’m stressing over track selection/flow.
I understand starting slower and building energy, but I’m struggling with how to actually pull the right tracks at the right time when BPMs jump so much between genres.
I’ve got about 67 songs planned so far for a 2 hour set (adding more), but I keep feeling like I can only mix by gradually increasing BPM and when I try that, it sounds boring.
How do you guys handle big BPM jumps in open format sets without killing the dancefloor energy?
How do you guys handle big BPM jumps in open format sets without killing the dancefloor energy?
Basically… how do you stop thinking like “I must stay in BPM order” and start thinking like an actual open format DJ?
Would love advice from DJs who play parties/clubs/weddings etc. because right now I feel like I’m overthinking the hell out of this 😭
