I am switching from a WFH gig to paratransit driver. This is a big step back career wise but my mental health has been lacking due to the isolation of WFH. I love helping people when I can, this will be a fun opportunity! Plus the benefits are amazing and you get an actual pension at the end of your career.
I currently work 8a-5p every day from home but this job will be 2p-11p. There are other shifts but, they are in need of people for this shift to start. They did say they contract out paratransit work when they don’t have the staff to make the schedules work whether it be a full calendar or they have too many people booked for a specific time. If there is no work at the end of the night they do allow you to leave and still get paid for the time you’re supposed to be on shift. They don’t take last min rides which is nice. It’s all scheduled before hand.
How long did it take you to move through seniority to switch out to other shifts? This is a union shop and I am
Not sure how many people they have right now. My wife works 2-3 days a week, her mother watches our kid when she is working a shift. I am not concerned about childcare but I am concerned about working so late, missing evening time with the family. The last time I worked this kind of shift was when I was in my 20’s with no wife or kids to worry about.
Thanks for any advice you have to give!
