Feminism is the new flex, knowledge is optional?
Had an interesting conversation with a friend recently. She was passionately talking about feminism, equality, representation etc.
So I asked a few simple questions:
Name 5 women scientists and what they contributed.
Name 5 female athletes from different sports.
Name 5 current women political leaders holding ministries (India/state).
Name 5 women writers.
Name 5 businesswomen.
Name 5 women who have actually contributed to women’s rights/empowerment.
And… she struggled. Managed maybe 2–3 names here and there. No scientists. Sports was almost blank. Details were even thinner. That’s where it started feeling a bit off, because if something is such a strong belief, shouldn’t there be at least basic awareness behind it?
Not even blaming her entirely, I think a lot of people fall into this. It’s easy to wear empowerment as a label, much harder to back it with actual knowledge. At some point it starts to feel less like conviction and more like a convenient flex.
Curious — how many of us can actually answer those questions without Googling?
