How do people actually annotate their books?? 📚😭 (I’m so confused)

I keep seeing books on Pinterest/Instagram full of tabs, highlights, and cute notes and I genuinely love that aesthetic 😭✨

But when I try to do it myself, I get stuck.

I don’t understand what I’m supposed to highlight or write. It always feels like the whole paragraph is important, so I end up not marking anything at all 🥲

And for designing/annotations how do people even decide? Tabs? Colours? Margins? It looks so effortless in other people’s books but I have zero idea where to start.

Is there like a simple beginner way to start annotating without overthinking everything?

Would really appreciate any tips 🙏📖
