High school football players and their ridiculous 40 times
High school football players who claim a very fast 40 are often exposed by their track times.

I consider the conversions in the above post to be a pretty good guide for combine-style 40 times converted to 100m. I've compared it to the combine 40 times of players who ran college track and found it to be pretty close in the vast majority of cases. I wouldn't use high school times since players typically get faster in college, nothing crazy but significant enough. Of course, every sprinter is different and some have better acceleration than others but there shouldn't be a drastic difference in 40 times between sprinters with same or very similar 100m.
But I've heard many high school football players claim to run a very fast 40, like a 4.5 or 4.6, yet they can't even break 12 seconds in 100m. Some examples just for fun :
A player with a PR of 12.3 in the 100m claims a 4.67 40.
Another player with the same 40 claim ran a 12.7 100m, although that is their only time recorded in the database. But it's still highly unlikely they run anywhere near a 4.6.
Another kid claimed a 4.47 40, and even claimed it was laser timed, yet has a 100m PR of 12.2
Not all these kids are liars, these 40 times are almost always hand timed, which is found to be on average a quarter of a second faster than electronic 40s. But if you can't run at least a low 11s 100m, you almost certainly don't run a 4.4 40. If you can't break 12 seconds in the 100m, you don't run a 4.6. Get your 40s timed electronically. You don't have to be a 4.4/4.5 guy. You're in high school, not the NFL. If you can run a legit sub 4.8, you're pretty damn fast in my book.
