Not really a question, maybe someone has some tips I can remember in the future. :)
I have a 40-gallon tank that's home to a school of salt and pepper cories, some danios, and recently brought home some black kuhli loaches. They are magical little creatures, and I have about 7 of them. I brought most of them home about two weeks ago after I rehomed my large chocolate albino pleco. My problem is that for the past year I've been culling ramshorn snails from my tank daily after bringing one home on a petstore purchased plant (not on purpose). The thought was the loaches would help, and I have seen improvement in the snail population since they've been in the tank! My snail removal routine is to take out the sponge filter, wipe it down, go over any plant leaves with visible snails, and every other day I remove each of the pieces of driftwood, knock off the snails, clean, and replace. Well, as Kuhlis love little hidey holes, they apparently decided that my one large (fake) wood cave was the ideal place to hide - this thing is hollow, and they had crawled up inside the ornament where I couldn't see them. I clean the tank items in my kitchen sink, in a collander so nothing falls through to the sink/drain. So I'm rinsing the object, and about ready to put it back in the tank when I flip it over and about FIVE of the loaches flop out into the collander :( I was able to quickly get them back in the water and they seem ok.
It seems like I need to keep up my routine as much as possible to keep the snail population down, but I WON'T move that object again! I have added additional hides for the kuhlis, and am going to continue to add more plants. Now that the pleco is gone, the tank is sort of finding its new "balance."
Kuhlis are new to me, so if anyone has any advice on keeping them happy I'm all ears. I am in the process of adding additional sand and replacing the gravel, but it's kind of a slow process! They are certainly cute but odd little creatures! :)
