Hey all,

Last year we did a trip to Yellowstone and honestly loved it (we're from Europe), so this summer (August) we’re heading to California for a two week trip with a similar focus on nature.

We’ve put together a rough itinerary, but still figuring out some of the details:

  • Los Angeles – 3 nights
  • Santa Barbara – 2 nights
  • Monterey / Carmel (Big Sur area) – 1 night
  • Sequoia / Kings Canyon (Azalea Campground) – 2 nights
  • Yosemite (Hodgdon Meadow Campground) – 3 nights
  • TBD: Winery / coastal area near SF – 1 night
  • San Francisco – 2 nights
  • Then back to Europe

We’ll be camping with a tent where possible at campgrounds (except for the cities) and mostly interested in hiking, mountains, alpine lakes, and nice beaches.

Where we’re still unsure:

  • How to best divide time between Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon (or something else). We are still flexible, but of course most campgrounds are already fully booked for August. We did reserve Hodgdon and Azalea to be sure.
  • Whether SEKI is worth it in this route or if we’re better off spending more time elsewhere.

Instead of SEKI and/or the last night before heading back to SF, we're also thinking about:

  • Lake Tahoe? But understood it's extremely busy in August
  • or Mammoth Lakes / Eastern Sierra (via Tioga Pass)?

Would love to hear what people would do in our situation:

  • What would you change to get the most out of the nature side of the trip? Are we missing any less-known areas that would be a better fit?
  • Is this too much driving and should we skip somehting?
  • Is SEKI a must-do, or would you skip it?
  • Tahoe vs Mammoth… or something else?

Any input is much appreciated!!
