I think that assigning group projects in higher education, especially in an online class setting, is silly. I think that assigning a group project in an online class setting for a final exam grade is absolutely bonkers. I have hated group projects since I was in the fourth grade, because I always end up carrying the weight for everyone. Not because I am a perfectionist, but because I was not allowed to bring home a grade below a certain letter. So, in order to cover myself, I’ll boost your grade… you’re welcome.

Now I’m in the 17th grade and I’m in a group with a classmate who doesn’t know how to write a literature review. They literally wrote a paragraph with four bullet points, one source and called it a literature review. The bullet points alone let me know that it’s the work of CHATGPT.

I know the right thing to do is bring it to their attention and have them do it over correctly, but for what benefit? It’s clear that they either don’t know how to do it or don’t care to do it. And we all will get the same grade in the end. I told them that their work was not expansive enough and I added that I don’t mind helping them sort through the few references they provided to pull out topics and create a lit review. Their response - “that’s so kind of you, thanks.”

At least the semesters almost over.
