Love For Join Together (Album)?
I listened to this album for the first time today, after ignoring it for so long, and I was pleasantly surprised!
Compared to the limp and lifeless Who's Last, this is actually a very lively recording, with the other musicians adding a lot. The Tommy half is fantastic and Pete's acoustic playing is really great. Simon Phillips does very well on the drums, not imitating Keith and bringing a lot of energy and life. Steve Bolton's lead guitar can be a bit over flashy at times but it fits the arrangements. This version of Tommy is sort of like a bridge between the original and the movie, though I wish there was a guest vocalist for The Acid Queen.
Pete's vocals sound fantastic, excellent version of Rough Boys. Roger sounds good and John kills it on Trick Of The Light. His bass tone is outstanding, he always got better and better.
The second half has some interesting tunes worked in. I was expecting the worst but this was a nice change of pace. Obviously nothing could ever touch the originals at full power, but for what it is I think Join Together is fun.
