Peanut allergy advice
I made a post a little bit ago. I’m currently 21m and I’m wanting to join the navy. A year and a half ago I tried joining the army because i felt like it aligned more with what I wanted. Plus my dad’s cousin was a ranger and thought that’d be a cool thing to strive for. When I went to try to join I had ADHD medicine and was off it. I got my pharmacy records and showed them to the army recruiter. He noticed an EpiPen on there and asked what it was for. I told him it was for a peanut allergy. He said I’d never be able to join with a peanut allergy unless I get a test. So I went and got a blood test and had an oral food test. I almost got through but then at like the last bit a got a few hives. I kinda felt lost because I dropped out of college to try to join and I feel like I wasted 2 years doing this for nothing. I went back on my medication since I was going to try to go back to school. Around 2 weeks ago I got a call from the navy asking if I had joined and told them about the army not working out due to peanut allergies. They said they were surprised about that because there are waivers with peanut allergies. (For reference, my allergy is mild. I do get itchy after eating some but that’s about it unless I eat a ton of them.) But now they want me to try to join and I told them I’m on my medicine again. I guess my question is, do I stop my medication and try to join? Or is it not worth it? I don’t want to throw another wrench into my future but I don’t want to miss this opportunity while I’m young. Any advice? I’m in shape and I scored a 91 on the ASVAB, hopefully those help my chances.
