It’s been a while since I’ve done this but in the past, I’ve tried to grade on my own and then get a gut check here. This time around, a friend passed along a copy of Brave and the Bold 85, asking if it was worth it to send to CGC.

First off, being able to flip through and read an honest to goodness Neal Adams book was a thrill, and have it be the debut of the “new green costume”. It’s from August 1969 and given that books hit the newsstands about a month before the publication date, it was probably on the shelves as Apollo 11 was on the moon.

I digress…  The book looks “good” at first glance and from a distance. The colors on the cover are still strong but the white at the top is faded, but not tanning.

It has off white pages and rounded corners. The back cover shows wear. I also count about 15 spine ticks on the front cover. There is also what looks like a slight staple tear or pull in the centerfold. It appears to be a well-loved book!

Thankfully this kid did not cut out the Palisades Park coupon!

The biggest knock are three creases on the front cover, with the longest one being over 2inces and the others being 1 and 1 ½ inches. There are also three on the back cover with two of them being 2 inches and the other 1 inch. The longest ones I believe are printer creases and the others could be from use.

All this put together, I think it is a 5.0 (Very Good/Fine). But I also find these middle grades hard to nail as I’m still new to doing this.

Posted are the pictures, including some just of the art because it’s so good! I’d love to know if you all think I’m in the ballpark.
