We have a senior dog that’s 13 years old. The vet said our dog has dog dementia. She would occasionally get restless and dig a little at rugs, her bed, etc, but over the last two months our dog has become quite destructive while we are working and restless/pacing/panting while we attempt to sleep. About two months ago, our dog was prescribed gabapentin(combined with trazodone) and worked wonders for about two weeks and over this last month our dog has because increasingly destructive. She digs at the couch cushions, pees anywhere we have our scent, and there’s always a mess to clean up when we get home everyday.
Is this a paradoxical agitation from gabapentin given it worked well for two weeks then increasingly worse behavior or is it a sign that we will soon say goodbye to our furry friend? We love our dog, but it’s so much stress and we live in an apartment that she’s already damaged a door and the blinds to our patio door. Also, she is still in good physical condition overall.
