I use immich with my wife (using a single account because we want our people identifiers merged -- is that the best way to do it?), and we just bought a fast batch photo scanner and are planning to scan dozens of albums going back to the 1980s (before we were married and she was even born) from both our families. We want them to be available to us, and for relevant photos to be available to our respective families.
A few alternatives as far as how to do that:
- Upload them to an external library and then just import it to our account. Then all the people will be identified across all the photos, and any search will pick up everything relevant. We can make giant albums for various groups of family members and send them links. This would allow them to see everything relevant, but not necessarily to search it, which may not be great with an enormous set like that. Updates to the external library may necessitate manual updates to albums.
- Create a separate accounts for different family members, import the same external libraries to bunches of them (depending on what is relevant to whom). This creates a potential organizational nightmare and TONS of redundant machine learning load. Also, if we ever update those external libraries, they would need to be rescanned on each account separately.
- Decide this is not what immich was designed for, and simply share individual photos and small albums as necessary without giving anyone else in the family any real access
Are there better options that I haven't thought of?
