X-Mid 2: Modding the Stargazer Kit for "Porch Mode" and more?

Hey, I’m absolutely loving my X-Mid 2! I’ve started carrying the Stargazer Kit on every trip—the extra few grams don't bother me, and I like having the extra cordage and hardware handy. However, I’ve run into a bit of a "buckle dilemma" while trying to maximize the kit's versatility. I have two specific points I’m trying to optimize:

  1. The Door / Porch Mode Problem I wanted to use the Stargazer straps to pitch the door high (porch mode), similar to how Dan shows it with a trekking pole and a spare line. I thought the Stargazer kit would be perfect for this, but I realized the buckles on the peak/fly don’t match the ones on the door. Does anyone know if there’s a specific design or strength reason why these buckle sizes differ? I’m considering sewing the matching buckle size onto the Stargazer strap or making a small "adapter loop" so I can clip it anywhere.

  2. Main Guy Points Since I have the kit with me anyway, I’d love to use it to further stabilize the main guy points or as an extension. Has anyone found a clever way to integrate the Stargazer clips with the standard guy-out points?

My Plan: I’m currently leaning towards a DIY solution—either sewing the "missing" buckle size onto the kit or building small adapter clips/loops to keep everything flexible without modifying the tent itself. Has anyone done something similar? Or maybe you've found a specific hardware piece (like a clip-on buckle) that solves this? Would love to hear your thoughts and start a discussion!

Cheers!

Hi everyone, I just finished a 7-day trek on Madeira with my Durston X-Mid 2. On the final day, the pull-cord on one of my stakes snapped while I was breaking camp. The ground was extremely dense and packed. At first, I thought it was just abrasion, but I was extra careful with the next stake and the cord snapped again. It seems the friction/tension from the hard soil is too much for the stock loops. Has anyone else experienced this with the original stake cords? I’m looking to replace them all with something more durable and abrasion-resistant. What cordage did you use (Dyneema, Lawson Glowire, etc)? Thanks for the help!
