I checked my Search Console after 2 months and I’m completely shocked.
So, a few months ago, I was working on a SaaS product for myself and hit a brick wall - I needed to extract specific frames from a video.
Naturally, I went to Google. I searched everywhere, but I couldn't find a single tool that did exactly what I needed. Everything out there felt incomplete or just didn't work the way I wanted it to.
Being a dev, I decided to just build the tool myself. I used it for my project, it worked perfectly, and I was done with it. But then I had a "why not" moment. I figured I might as well throw it onto my little tools website just for fun. I had zero expectations. I didn’t even check Google Trends to see if people were looking for it. I just uploaded it and completely forgot about it.
Fast forward about two months... I finally decided to log into my Google Search Console.
I was honestly shocked.
This "random" frame extractor is now my top traffic source by a mile. I haven't done any marketing, and there wasn't even a major trend for this, but the data (attached) doesn't lie. It’s sitting at 88k impressions and carrying my site’s traffic.
I’m at a crossroads now. I never planned for this to be a "main" project.
- Should I double down on this and try to grow it further?
- How would you even go about monetizing a utility tool like this?
- Or should I just leave it as a "traffic magnet" and let it ride?
I’d love to hear some perspectives or ideas from anyone who has been in a similar spot. What would you do?
