I'm new to Overwatch, I just got the game so I could play with him and tonight will be my first time playing. How do I pick a character to play as?

My friend explained what the roles are and how to actually play, but not the mechanism and stuff. He also said that I would probably have a hard time and should reconsider the other classes.

For context, I always go with support in multiplayer games. The reason he said I should reconsider is because I prefer to play as a healer when the role exists.
