my cat (almost four year old male) has recently started refusing to use his litter box. he instead is peeing and pooping directly next to it. we have taken him to the vet and there is nothing wrong with his medically, when it started he was using a plastic litter box but we have since switched to a stainless steel box, and he has used the same litter all his life.

there was a hug mat i had next to his litter that he was peeing on that we have now thrown away, which we think caused him to start using the box again but now he’s back to going next to it.

im a college student so im not sure if it could be because of my absence, but im planning on taking him to school with me in the fall so i would love to get this figured out before then.
