Late summer/early fall trip to Gros Morne

Hi all! My husband and I are planing a trip to Newfoundland for late summer/early fall (likely sometime September or very early October).
We are coming from Halifax and I think we’ve decided to fly into Deer Lake instead of the ferry from Cape Breton since it’s much quicker.
Our main attraction is Gros Morne. We will be traveling with a 1-year-old so shorter day hikes is what we are planning. I’ve looked on AllTrails and found some good ones, but if anyone has any favourite hikes in the 5-10km range please let me know!
We will rent a car and be there for about a week. Is it worth spending a night in Deer Lake when we first arrive? Or should we head straight to Rocky Harbour?
What are other towns/ or activities in this region of Newfoundland that are a must see?
