Haunted Armor Artificer multi class build

I'm trying to finalize my build for our Strahd campaign. I've run this by the DM and he loves the idea. I could use some help really fleshing it out and polishing it.

---The character---

My character will reside in/possess a suit of armor (a la Alphonse Elric). Not sure what my backstory will be. But we (me and dm) agree this is a great way to make a thematically appropriate artificer for CoS.

We think it would be appropriate to use the warforged race, and flavor it to match. But another race could be used if there's a better match. We are also talking about a random chance that when I get crit, one of my limbs may fall off and I need to reattach it to use it.

---The class/playstyle---

I'm looking to make a fairly tanky character. We have a Wild Sorcerer, a Death Cleric, and a Blood Hunter, so a solid tank would be a good fit for the team.

I was definitely thinking Artificer Armorer. Beyond that, I'm not sure if/what I would want to multi class. My initial thought was a Paladin or Cleric (forge) multi class before I thought up the haunted armor idea. Now I'm not sure that it fits. Maybe some type of warlock? I'm open to ideas on that one. Whatever I do, I would want it to both contribute to the lore and contribute to the tankiness/cc of the build.

---Other notes---

DM wouldn't care if I built it in 5e or 5.5e rules.

We are trying to have a fairly serious tone, but occasionally silly situations are fine.

I would like a character that's online fairly early on (maybe level 4 ish?)

Any ideas or feedback would be appreciated :)

We're going to be running Curse of Strahd soon, and I'm just not sure what I want my character to be. We currently have

- A wild magic sorcerer (They are going to lean into tarot reading and stuff)

- A Paladin (Oath of Vengeance I believe)

- A Blood Hunter

What I want

- I want to thematically fit the setting, class especially, race at least somewhat

- I like to play characters that can fill out the parties roster, and fill the niches the rest can't.

- I've played a lot of Druid and Ranger, but I'm open to playing just about anything.

- I wouldn't necessarily say I power build, but it's nice to have a character that does what they do really well.

- DM is ok with either 5e or 5.5e characters

- Fairly serious game tone, occasional jokes at table

I don't necessarily need a whole character (but if you have one, feel free), just a nudge towards a build you feel meets those criteria

Thanks!

Like, I couldn't have just caught a break and got a piece I actually wanted? I made the best spray build I could possibly think of for it, and it literally took me over a minute to get a kill (NM 160, but still). No joke, I think using it in a swim build would still be a better use. Not optimal, but I would probably actually get somewhere
