Hi everyone,

I’m about to take a cognitive test where, among other things, short-term memory will be assessed. A sequence of alphanumeric codes will be shown on the screen, each displayed in a specific color, and my task will be to recall which code was shown in a particular color.

At the moment, I memorize them in the form of “red BBX345,” “blue TTV007,” and so on. My question is: does anyone have up-to-date information on whether this approach (as I understand it, relying on phonological / verbal memory) is actually optimal for this kind of task, or would it be better to memorize the codes visually as images instead?

I expect between 3 and 10 codes, and the goal is to give as many correct answers as possible within the time limit.

Also, would the strategy change if the items were shown as “symbol + number” instead? For example, “star 35” or “apple 19,” where the star and apple are displayed as actual symbols rather than words.

Thanks in advance.
