Criminal Investigator I - PERs, Pros, Cons?
Hi Everyone, I am currently in the process of interviewing/testing for a Criminal investigator I position with the State of Nevada. I'm trying to weigh the pros & cons of potentially accepting this job and was wanting some first hand input.
Little context: I am currently a legal administrative coordinator & make 71.5k before end of year bonus. After taxes, etc I walk away with about 56.2k in pocket.
The criminal investigator job is listed as starting at $71,075.52, which is why I applied. The pay cut was barely relevant to care. But after hearing about how much PERS takes out of your check in addition to still having to pay Federal taxes, I am a bit skeptical.
* Does PERS really take 30% of your check in addition to paying federal taxes?? (I talked to a guy employed in the prison as a CO & he said hes forced to pay 30%. That is in additional to federal taxes is a huge amount of your check. Roughly 50%)
* Can you opt out of PERS?
* if you accepted this job previously, did the experience gained help you get a better, higher paying position elsewhere? (FBI,DHS, Etc)
* What is your experience with PERS? Pros, Cons, Etc?
TIA
