How to install apps on os 2.2.1

I found an iphone 3g localy for a realy good price, the seller showed on the about part of the setings that it is runing os 2.2.1

I know there are mobile patches sort of like todays app sync but I can’t find any info/download about them?

So in short how the heck do I get apps on there?

I have an ipod touch 1st gen on ios 3.1.3 and im loving it! Just for some reason only some of my songs have their cover art? I did so digging and I’d have to replace each cover image so that it’s 600x600. Is there any tweak to fix this? And better yet maybe some alternative music app for ios 3?
