I started getting occasional cold sores around age 20/21, very rarely, maybe two or three times a year. Maybe three years ago, they became more frequent. I started keeping track of OBs, they seem to occur every 2-6 weeks. I'm not sure if it's HSV 1 or 2, my doctor has refused to order a test. I've only ever had oral outbreaks.

I was diagnosed with PCOS in December, and suspected the hormone fluctuations were triggering OBs. I started continuous birth control to stabilize hormones, but this doesn't seem to be helping with the OBs. I take 500mg of Valacyclovir (helps with healing time, but again, doesn't seem to be stopping OBs), 2000-3000mg L-Lysine and zinc every day. I don't drink, I'm active, I maintain a healthy diet, my lifestyle is relatively low-stress. Nothing seems to help and this is driving me crazy. I can't believe there's no other treatment options available.

Every time I have an outbreak, I spiral into researching. I don't know why they suddenly started appearing once or twice a month. Did I have a weaker strain of HSV initially and contract a more aggressive one several years later? What else can I do to prevent OBs? This is ruining my life.
