How are you guys preparing for the HantaVirus?

There are no reported cases in my state as of yet, but you know what they say: “when you see it on the news, it’s already too late”. From what I’ve seen online we’re looking at a 35 to 50% mortality rate. I think that’ll go down a bit with a wider genetic cross section and actual medical infrastructure, but even 20% would be catastrophic for society. Can you imagine 20% of the people you interact with every day just disappearing? Or worse, getting visibly sicker and sicker and then disappearing?

I went out today and bought $150 in Canned goods, $80 in bullets, and another $80 or so in gas (between my car and two 5 gallon cans). I get paid again in a few days and plan to pick up more canned goods, water, and bullets. I don’t know if any antibiotics work against Hantavirus (after all it is a virus) but I’ll see if I can’t pick up some immune boosters or something. Masks and gloves at the very least.

I know a lot of people are scared right now. My mind keeps going to the movie “Contagion”, with Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Kate Winslet. The disease isn’t as severe as in that movie, but I think the parts where people just lose it and start stealing, rioting, and hurting other people is scary enough.

I posted this as a comment under a post a few hours ago, but that post got removed.

I work in the villages, I was driving home around 6pm, and I had a Marion County Deputy follow me for 6+ miles on a backroad I use to avoid traffic.

I had my cruise control set for 2 mph above the speed limit, my tags are paid up until January 27, and my car note is paid. None of my lights are out, and this is a somewhat newer vehicle, so there’s no damage to it. Absolutely no reason for him to be following me or suspicious of my car. I kid you not, I watched this cop in my rear view mirror look me up on his little computer minimum three times.

I know I was being specifically targeted as well, because two people passed me going 5+ MPH faster than me, and he was still riding my tail. I’ve been in trouble with speeding tickets in the past, which is probably why he thought I was a good mark, but I didn’t give him any reason to pull me over. I also know exactly when he gave up, because he followed me onto baseline for a bit too (and people FLY Down that road) before he hit his turn signal and went into the median rather than continue to follow me.

I was just trying to drive home from work and having a sheriff’s deputy sitting exactly 10 feet behind me for almost half my drive was not a good way to unwind. Please please please be careful, yall. Don’t give them a reason to pull you over. My theory is that they’re just trying to meet some kind of quota.
