Hey everyone,
I’m a first‑year CSE student (2025–29 batch) at a private university in Chennai, and I’m currently super confused about whether to commit to cybersecurity or to pivot towards software development / general‑purpose IT roles.
I’ve always been more drawn to cybersecurity – I’ve been following content, roadmaps, and basics since 11th grade, and I’ve already invested a lot of time mentally building a “cyber” identity. But after coming to college, I’ve not really progressed much, and now I’m scared because of the way the cybersecurity job market is being talked about (high entry bar, relatively fewer roles for freshers, need for strong labs/OSCP‑level practice, etc.).
On the other hand, I also see that development / full‑stack / DSA‑heavy roles seem to have way more mass‑hires and campus‑drive opportunities in India, but the long‑term growth, salary, and job‑security narrative looks a bit different.
I’m also on a large education loan (around low‑6‑figure in rupees, 8–9% ROI) that I’ll need to start repaying from 2030 onwards, after a grace year. I really just want to get a stable job in Chennai with a decent package that lets me live comfortably and clear this loan without my family struggling too much.
What I’m hoping for
- Brutal comparison:
• Is it actually safer to go development‑first right now for a fresher in India, or is cybersecurity still a realistic, high‑paying path if done the right way?
• What are the realistic freshers’ packages for each in Chennai‑style companies vs. product MNCs?
- If you think I should NOT go cyber:
• Convince me in practical terms (not just “it’s hard” or “it’s niche”) – I’ve already mentally invested years in this domain and I’m emotionally attached to it.
- If you think I should go cyber:
• Give me a clear, step‑by‑step roadmap from first‑year to pre‑placement (2025–2029) that actually leads to a job with a higher package (or at least a solid starting salary in India).
• Things like:
• what labs / platforms to use
• which certs make sense as a student (and when)
• how to build a resume + GitHub + bug‑bounty / HTB‑style evidence instead of “I did a course”
• how to balance it with college academics / placements
- If you would choose development instead:
• Same thing: a realistic roadmap for DSA → web / backend / cloud / DevOps etc., plus what skills make you stand out in campus drives and online hiring in 2026–2029.
I’m also personally dealing with family health issues, so stability and predictability in the job market do matter a lot to me, but I’m not willing to sacrifice challenging, interesting work if the trade‑off is reasonable.
If you were in my position – interested in security but also scared of the market and loan pressure – what would you pick and how exactly would you plan your next 4–5 years?
Any honest, no‑fluff, numbers‑based advice (in terms of salary expectations, hiring trends in India, and realistic timelines) would mean a lot. Thanks in advance.
