So for some context, I (23) live with my girlfriend (also 23). She moved in a couple months ago after graduating college and moving out of her parents’ house into my apartment.

I’ve lived here since I was 18. My dad owns the place—it’s an old two-story house from the 1920s. The upstairs was redone into a one-bedroom apartment for me, and downstairs is my grandma, his mom, and her boyfriend (she’s been with him since like 8th grade).

Anyway, last weekend i invited a new coworker over. She started working with me around the same time my girlfriend moved in. I hadn’t told this coworker that I live with my girlfriend—not because I was hiding it, it just never came up and didn’t feel necessary.

I invited her over after a rough shift so she could see the place and have a drink. We walked from work (it’s only about 5 minutes) and went up to my apartment. She met my pets—my 9-year-old Cane Corso, Siri, and my cat, Reggie. I showed her around, and then we went into the living room. My girlfriend was working on something at our shared computer. I introduced them, they said hi, and everything seemed normal.

I showed my coworker my snake, then we went back to the kitchen to make drinks. My girlfriend joined us, and we were all just hanging out. At one point, my coworker asked how long my girlfriend was staying. I said she lives here. She didn’t react much, so I made drinks for all of us.

We went back into the living room and sat down—my coworker and I on the daybed couch. Then she asked my girlfriend if she lived downstairs. My girlfriend said no, that she lives upstairs—with me. My coworker immediately stood up and said, “Oh, is this your bed? I’m so sorry, I didn’t know I should’ve asked before sitting down.” I was about to explain, but my girlfriend beat me to it and said she sleeps there too. With me. In our room. Then my coworker asked if we shared a bed because we were looking for a bigger place or because my girlfriend was just temporarily staying.

I was honestly confused. I thought it was obvious we were dating. I wouldn’t have been offended if she assumed that—most people would.

Before I could say anything, my girlfriend stood up and told her we weren’t looking for a bigger place and that she lives here because she’s my girlfriend. That’s why we share a bed.

My coworker gave us this disgusted look like we were something she stepped in. She said it was wrong, that we couldn’t be dating because we’re both girls and it “wasn’t part of God’s plan.” That’s when I lost it.

Not about her religion—but about her coming into my home and saying that to us. I yelled at her and said things I’m not proud of. I told her to get out of my apartment and to change her schedule because I won’t work with someone who disrespects me and my girlfriend like that in our own space.

She stormed out.

After that, my girlfriend and I just stayed on the couch the rest of the night watching stupid movies.
